Back-to-School Traffic: A Florida Rider’s Safety Guide

As students return to school, Florida roads become busier with school buses, vehicles, motorcycles, pedestrians, bicyclists, and crossing guards. Morning and afternoon commutes will require extra patience and attention from everyone on the road.

For motorcyclists, this is the time to ride with extra caution. Stay alert, remain visible, reduce your speed in school zones, and maintain a safe following distance. Expect sudden stops, quick lane changes, and drivers who may not see you. Defensive riding gives you more time to react and keeps every ride safe and enjoyable.

Slow Down in School Zones

This is a time we tend to forget that school zones are active. Remember to pay extra attention when approaching a school, reduce your speed, watch for flashing school zone lights, scan sidewalks, and be prepared to stop for crossing guards or pedestrians.

Sharing the Road with School Buses

As we all know, school buses make frequent stops. To ensure everyone is safe, increase following distance and watch for children crossing the road.

Watch For New Drivers

There will be many new drivers sharing the road this school year. Defensive riding gives you more time to react when others make a mistake.
