Ride to Work Day: A Reminder to Ride Smart in Florida

Everyday Motorcycle Safety Tips Every Rider Should Follow

On the third Monday in June, riders across Florida join the national celebration of Ride to Work Day (RTW Day), a movement recognizing motorcycles and scooters as efficient, enjoyable, and practical transportation. The day brings together everyday commuters and passionate riders who take to the road not only for convenience, but for the love of the ride. RTW Day is more than just a celebration — it’s a reminder that safety must always come first.

Why Safety Matters in Florida

Florida’s year-round riding weather makes it one of the most popular states for motorcycles. According to data from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV), motorcycle registrations continue to rise. While more motorcycles on the road can ease traffic and parking congestion, it also increases the importance of awareness — for both motorcyclists and motorists.

Everyday Motorcycle Safety Tips Every Rider Should Follow

To stay safe on Florida roads, especially during your commute, here are a few key practices all motorcyclists should keep in mind:

  • Wear a DOT-Approved HelmetHelmets can significantly reduce the risk of serious injury or death. Look for the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) symbol on the back when shopping for a helmet to ensure it meets federal safety standards. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 218.
  • Ride Sober
Alcohol and drugs impair reaction time and decision-making. In 2023, impaired riding remained a major cause of motorcycle crashes in Florida. If you’re not sober, don’t ride.
  • Make Yourself Visible
Wear bright reflective gear, use your headlights and signals, and avoid staying in motorists’ blind spots. Drivers often fail to see motorcycles until it’s too late.

Shared Responsibility on the Road

Motorcycle safety is a two-way street. While riders must take precautions, also play a role. Motorists are urged to check their blind spots, allow motorcycles full use of a lane, and understand common motorcycle behaviors — such as downshifting (slowing down by shifting to a lower gear, often without using brakes) or changing position within a lane to stay visible.

Ride to Work—Ride for Life

Ride to Work Day is about more than just commuting; it’s a show of support for the motorcycling community. Riders come from every walk of life, and this day highlights the diversity and value of motorcycle transportation.
